Karen Michelsen Castañón: Stories beyond the “discovery” of Abya Yala (Central, South America and the Caribbean)

Karen Michelsen Castañón will share short excerpts from conversations in her video project No Poems for Columbus, which offer a change of perspective on the so-called “discovery” of the American continent. What do these stories mean to us? Do they have anything to do with our everyday and school experiences? We can respond to this and talk about our own experiences. Together we collect the ” material” to create a small Arpillera (textile collage). Mostly books for teenagers are written by adults. The workshop offers a space where young people and adults can exchange ideas on this topic at eye level and learn from each other.

Karen Michelsen Castañón is an artist and filmmaker. She is engaged in cultural education projects and is a member of colectivo qellcay. Her work deals with the way (colonial) stories are written and includes short films, photos and textiles.

The workshop is part of the Nepantla Library within the framework of Wissen über Brücken – Conocimiento sobre puentes. Relating to Gloria E. Anzaldúa in Words, Vision and Context, a project by Verena Melgarejo Weinandt and District * School without a centre in cooperation with the Sonntagsbureau in the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek Berlin and the publishing house Zaglossus. Karen Michelsen Castañón compartirá breves extractos de conversaciones en su proyecto de vídeo Keine Gedichte für Kolumbus (Ningún poema para Colón), que ofrece un cambio de perspectiva sobre el llamado “descubrimiento” del continente americano. ¿Qué significan estas historias para nosotras/os? ¿Tienen algo que ver con nuestras experiencias cotidianas y escolares? Podemos responder estas preguntas y compartir sobre nuestras experiencias. Lo que se comparta nos dará el ” material ” para crear una pequeña Arpillera (collage textil).
‘La mayoría de los libros para adolescentes están escritos por adultos. El taller ofrece un espacio donde jóvenes y adultos pueden intercambiar ideas sobre este tema desde una posición de igualdad y aprender unas/os de otras/os.

Karen Michelsen Castañón es artista y cineasta. Participa en proyectos de educación cultural y es miembro del colectivo qellcay. Su trabajo trata sobre la forma en que se escriben las historias (coloniales) e incluye cortometrajes, fotos y textiles.

El taller forma parte de la Biblioteca Nepantla en el marco de Wissen über Brücken – Conocimiento sobre puentes. Relacionándonos con Gloria E. Anzaldùa en Palabras, Visión y Contexto. Este proyecto de traducción junto con una serie de eventos es organizado y curado por Verena Melgarejo Weinandt y District * Schule ohne Zentrum y se lleva a cabo en cooperación con el Sonntagsbureau de la Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek Berlin y la Editorial Zaglossus.
